Meaning: I bow before the Sun, who shines like a sapphire, holds a bow and a spear in his hands, wears a crown, sits on a vulture, frightens the enemies, has four arms, is calm, gives boons and is always beneficial to his devotees.

Meaning: In ancient times, there was a famous Chakravarti king named Dasharatha in the Raghuvansha, who was the lord of all the seven islands.

Meaning: One day during his reign, the astrologers, seeing Saturn in the last phase of Krittika, told the king that now this Saturn will penetrate Rohini.

Meaning: This is called ‘Rohini-Shakat-Bhedan'. This yoga is fearful for both the gods and demons and after this there is a very painful famine of twelve years.

Meaning: The king heard these words of the astrologers along with his ministers. He also saw the people of the city and the district very anxious.

Meaning: At that time the inhabitants of the cities and villages became frightened and began to pray to the king for protection from this calamity.

Meaning: Seeing the restlessness of his subjects, King Dasharatha said to Sage Vasishtha and the leading Brahmins, ‘O Brahmins! Please tell me some solution to this problem.

Meaning: On this Vashishtha ji said- ‘If Saturn pierces this nakshatra (Rohini) of Prajapati, then how can the people remain happy. Even Brahma and Indra etc. gods are unable to protect from the ill effects of this yoga.

Meaning: After listening to these words of the learned men, the king felt that if he could not avert this hour of crisis, he would be called a coward. So the king thought about it and mustered courage and equipped himself with a divine bow and divine weapons.

Meaning: Driving the chariot at a fast speed, he took it to the constellation three lakh yojanas above the moon.

Meaning: The mighty king, seated in a golden chariot decorated with gems and precious stones, came behind Rohini and stopped the chariot.

Meaning: King Dasharatha arrived there accompanied by white horses and adorned with tall flags and adorned with a crown studded with precious gems.

Meaning: Seeing Dasaratha standing in front of him with the weapons that could kill the gods and demons, Shani got a little scared and smilingly started saying to the king.

Varam Bruhi Pradasyami Svechchhaya Raghunandanah!

Meaning: Shani said- ‘O King! I have not seen anyone who has such valour as you, because the gods, demons, humans, Siddhas, Vidyadhars and creatures of the serpent species become afraid just by seeing me. O King! I am very pleased with your penance and valour. Therefore, O Raghunandan! Take whatever boon you wish for, I will give it to you.

Meaning: Dasharath said- O Sun-son Shani-Dev! If you are pleased with me, then I ask for only one boon that as long as rivers, oceans, moon, sun and earth are in this world, you should never pierce the Rohini chariot. I ask for only this boon and I have no other wish.
Then Shani said ‘so be it' and granted the boon. Thus, the king considered himself blessed after receiving the boon from Shani. Then Shani said- ‘I am extremely pleased with you, you can ask for more boons.

Meaning: Then the king was pleased and asked for another boon from Shani. Then Shani said- ‘O son of Suryavanshi, you should be fearless, be fearless. There will be no famine in your kingdom for twelve years. Your fame and glory will spread in all the three worlds. After getting such a boon, the king was pleased and keeping the bow and arrow in the chariot, he meditated on Saraswati Devi and Ganpati and started praising Shani in this way.

Dasharatha Krita Shani Stotra:

Namah Krishnaya Nilaya Shitikant Nibhaya Cha
Namah Kalagnirupaya Kritantaya Cha Vai Namah।।

Meaning: Salutations to Lord Shani, whose body colour is blackish blue and similar to that of Lord Shankar. Salutations again and again to Shani, who is the form of black fire and death for the world.

Namo Nirmaansa Dehaya Dirghashmashrujataaya Cha
Namo Vishalanetraya Shushkodara Bhayakrite

Meaning: Salutations to Lord Shanidev whose body is like a skeleton and whose beard, moustache and matted hair are grown. Salutations to Lord Shanidev whose big eyes, belly pressed to the back and terrifying form.

Namah Pushkalagatraya Sthularomnaith Vai Namah
Namo Dirghaya Shushkaya Kaladamshtra Namo'stu Te

Meaning: I repeatedly salute Lord Shanidev whose body is spread out, whose hair is very thick, who is tall and broad but has a dry body and whose beard is in the form of death.

Meaning: O Shane! Your eyes are deep like sockets, it is difficult to look at you, you are extremely furious, fierce and dreadful, salutations to you.

Meaning: Valimook! You are the one who consumes everything, I salute you. Son of the Sun! Son of Bhaskar! God who gives protection! I salute you.

Namo Mandagate Tubhyam Nistrimshaya Namo'stute

Meaning: O Shanidev who looks downwards! I salute you. O Samvartak! I salute you. O Shani who moves slowly! Your symbol is like a sword, I salute you again and again.

Tapasa Dagdha-Dehaya Nityam Yogarataya Cha
Namo Nityam Kshudhartaya Atriptaaya Cha Vai Namah

Meaning: You have burnt your body with austerity, you are always engaged in yoga practice , are hungry and insatiable. Salutations to you always .

Jnanachakshurnamaste'stu Kashyapatmaja-Sunave
Tushto Dadasi Vai Rajyam Rushto Harasi Tatkshanat

Meaning: O eye of knowledge! I salute you. I salute you, son of Sun and son of Kashyapa, Shanidev. When you are pleased, you give away the kingdom and when you are angry, you take it away instantly.

Tvaya Vilokitah Sarve Nasham Yanti Samoolatah

Meaning: Gods, demons, humans, Siddhas, Vidyadhars and serpents – all of them get completely destroyed when you cast your glance on them.

Evam Stutastada Saurirgraharajo Mahabal

Meaning: O God, be pleased with me. I am worthy of receiving a boon and have come to your refuge.

Meaning: On hearing the prayers of King Dasharatha in this manner, the mighty king of planets, Saturn, son of Sun, said, ‘O King Dasharatha, who is the observer of the best fast!

Evam Varam Pradasyami Yatte Manasi Vartate

Meaning: I am very satisfied with this praise of yours. O Raghunandan! Ask for any boon of your choice, I will surely give it to you.

Dasharatha Uvacha:

Prasanno Yadi Me Saure! Varam Dehi Mameepsitam
Adya Prabhriti-Pingaksha! Pida Deya Na Kasyachit
Prasadam Kuru Me Saure! Varoyam Me Maheepsitah।।

Meaning: King Dasharath said- ‘Lord! From today onwards, please do not hurt any creature- be it God, demon, human, animal, bird or snake. This is my only favourite boon.

Shani Uvacha:

Adeyastu Varau'smakam Tushto'ham Cha Dadami Te
Tvayaproktam Cha Me Stotram Ye Pathishyanti Manavah
Deva'sura-Manushyashcha Siddha Vidyadhoraga.

Meaning : Shani said- ‘O King! Although I do not give such a boon to anyone, but being satisfied I am giving it to you. The human being, god or demon, Siddha and scholar etc. who will recite this hymn told by you, they will not be obstructed by Shani.

Na Tesham Badhate Pida Matkruta Vai Kadachan।
Mrityusthane Chaturthe Va Janma-Vyaya-Dvitiyage।
Gochare Janmakale Va Dashasvantardashasu Cha।
Yah Pathed Dvi-Trisandhyam Va Shuchirbhutva Samahitah।।

Meaning: Those people in whose transit Saturn is in Mahadasha or Antardasha or in Lagna, second, fourth, eighth or twelfth house, if they become pure and recite this hymn attentively in the morning, noon and evening, I will certainly not torment them.

Meaning: O King! Those who want to receive my blessings should make an iron statue of me which has four arms.

Varadam Cha Dhanuh-Shul-Banankitakaram Shubham
Ayutamekajapyam Cha Taddashanshena Homatah

Meaning: And one should be holding a bow, spear and arrow.* After this, chant this hymn ten thousand times and offer one-tenth of the chant as a havan.

Payasasamsharkarayuktam Ghritamishram Cha Homayet

Meaning: Its ingredients should be made by mixing black sesame seeds, shami-patra, ghee, blue lotus, kheer and sugar.

Taile Va Telarashau Va Pratyaksha Va Yathavidhi

Meaning: After this, feed the Brahmins with products made from ghee and milk.

Meaning: Place the above idol of Shani in sesame oil or in a heap of sesame seeds and worship it with mantra as per the prescribed rituals, offer vermilion etc., offer blue and black basil, Shami leaves to please me.

Dhenu Va Vrishabham Chaapi Savatsam Cha Payasvinim

Meaning: Donate black coloured clothes, bull, milk giving cow along with its calf.

Meaning: O King! I will not let any kind of pain happen to the one who worships me with this hymn with the chanting of mantras, who recites this hymn with folded hands after worshiping me. Not only this, I will also protect him from the pain of other planets. In this way, I free the world from pain in many ways.
