Guru Nanak Jayanti has special significance for the followers of Sikhism . Guru Nanak Ji was the founder of Sikhism and the first Guru of the Sikhs. He was born on the full moon day of Kartik month. Therefore, every year Kartik Purnima day is celebrated as his birthday, which is also called Prakash Utsav of Guru Nanak Ji.

History and Importance of Guru Nanak Dev Ji

Born in 1469, Guru Nanak Ji lived in the 15th century during a time of great inequality. He was the founder of Sikhism and became the first Sikh Guru. He traveled many miles to spread the message of unity and purity. His teachings mainly consisted of three parts: “Wand Shako”, “Kirat Karo” and “Naam Japna”. “Wand Shako” means sharing with others and helping the needy. “Kirat Karo” means living honestly without exploiting or cheating anyone, “Naam Japna” means controlling disorders by meditating on the name of God.

Which means that a divine teacher Nanak has taken a holy birth; the great fog cleared and the world was bathed with divine light.

Guruparv is one of the most important festivals of Sikhism and is celebrated all over the world. According to Sikhs, Guru Nanak Dev Ji brought knowledge to this world.

Guru Nanak Jayanti is not celebrated for just one day, this festival lasts for three days. Akhand Paath is organized in Gurudwaras. During this, the spiritual scripture of the Sikh community, Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is recited continuously for 48 hours. A Kirtan procession is taken out in the city a day before Guru Nanak's birthday.

Meanwhile, the Sikh scripture Guru Granth Sahib is kept captive in a palace. During this festival, people sing Asa Di Vaar early in the morning. Arrangements are made to feed the poor in the afternoon. Therefore, the festival of Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated by serving others.
