Since Holika Dahan should not be performed during Bhadra, it is advised to do it after Bhadra ends, during the auspicious time from 11:26 PM to 12:30 AM.
The Story and Significance of Holika Dahan

According to the legend, Hiranyakashipu was a tyrant king who considered himself a god. However, his son Prahlad was a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu, which angered Hiranyakashipu. Despite several attempts, Hiranyakashipu failed to kill Prahlad due to Lord Vishnu’s divine protection.
Finally, Hiranyakashipu sought the help of his sister Holika, who had a boon that made her immune to fire. She tricked Prahlad into sitting on her lap inside a blazing fire, expecting him to burn while she remained unscathed. However, due to Lord Vishnu’s grace, Holika was reduced to ashes, while Prahlad emerged unharmed. This event symbolized the victory of faith and righteousness over evil. Since then, the festival of Holika Dahan has been celebrated to commemorate this victory.
Holika Dahan Rituals and Procedure
Holika Dahan is considered highly auspicious in Hinduism. It requires proper rituals and a pure heart. Below is the complete procedure for Holika Dahan:
1. Essential Items for Holika Dahan
- Wood and cow dung cakes
- Holy water (Ganga Jal)
- Roli and Akshat (Rice)
- Flowers and garlands
- Raw thread (Mouli)
- Coconut
- Turmeric and whole green gram (moong)
- Sugar candies (batasha) and jaggery
- Incense sticks and lamps
- New grains (such as wheat and barley ears)
2. Preparation for Holika Dahan
- Before the auspicious time, prepare the Holika structure using wood and cow dung cakes.
- Place a small wooden piece or dung cake as a representation of Prahlad near the Holika.
- Clean the puja site and sprinkle Ganga Jal to purify the area.
3. The Worship Ritual
(a) Worship and Mantras
- Invoke Lord Ganesha – Begin by remembering Lord Ganesha and seeking his blessings.
- Purification with Ganga Jal – Sprinkle Ganga Jal around the site and on Holika.
- Tie the sacred thread (Mouli) – Wrap the sacred raw thread around Holika three or seven times.
- Offerings to Holika –
- Apply roli, rice, flowers, turmeric, whole moong, batasha, and jaggery.
- Offer a coconut with a vow of devotion.

- Light the fire at the auspicious time.
- Chant the mantra:
