Chapter 1 – Arjuna’s Despondency
Verse 38
Yadhyapi, ete, na, pashyanti, lobhopahatchetasH,
Kulakshyakrtam’, dosham’, mitrdrohe, ch, paatkam’ ||38||
Literal Meaning (English):
The desire for power and pleasure never leaves the minds of the arrogant and the greedy.
So, should I too yearn for sovereignty over all three worlds?

The speaker here is reflecting deeply upon himself —
He says that those who are egoistic and greedy never let go of their desire for power, wealth, and worldly pleasures.
Then he questions himself:
“Should I also become like them and crave dominion over the three worlds (Heaven, Earth, and the Netherworld)?”
The implied answer is no, because such desires are rooted in illusion and attachment, and they lead one away from true inner peace.
Philosophical Insight:
This verse conveys the message of detachment (vairagya) and self-awareness.
The craving for power and indulgence binds a person in greed and pride.
