In Hinduism, fasts (vrats) and festivals hold special significance. They not only strengthen religious faith but also serve as means for spiritual purification and mental peace. One such highly virtuous fast is Bhaum Pradosh Vrat. While Pradosh Vrat is observed on every Trayodashi (13th lunar day) of the waxing (Shukla) and waning (Krishna) phases of the moon, when it falls on a Tuesday, it is called Bhaum Pradosh Vrat. This vrat is primarily dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva and is believed to grant the devotee various material and spiritual benefits.
What is Bhaum Pradosh Vrat?
Pradosh Vrat is observed on the Trayodashi tithi of both the Shukla and Krishna paksha of every lunar month. It is performed during the “Pradosh Kaal” – a period of approximately 1.5 hours after sunset, which is considered extremely auspicious for worshiping Lord Shiva.
When this Trayodashi falls on a Tuesday, it is termed Bhaum Pradosh Vrat. The word Bhaum refers to Tuesday, which is associated with the planet Mars (Mangal Graha). Mars is believed to govern strength, courage, blood, war, and land. On this day, along with Lord Shiva, Mars is also specially worshipped.
