Maha Shivratri in 2026 will be celebrated on Sunday, 15 February 2026.
This date falls on the Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi of the month of Phalguna.
What is Maha Shivratri?
Maha Shivratri is known as “The Great Night of Shiva.” It is believed that on this night, the divine energy of Lord Shiva is the most active on earth. Devotees observe fasts, meditate, and stay awake throughout the night in worship and devotion.
Why is Maha Shivratri Celebrated?
1. Marriage of Shiva and Parvati
According to mythology, on this day Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati got married.
2. Shiva’s Tandava Dance
As per the Puranas, Lord Shiva performed the cosmic dance “Tandava” on the night of Maha Shivratri—symbolizing creation, preservation, and destruction.
3. Drinking the Halahala Poison
During the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), Lord Shiva consumed the deadly poison “Halahala” to protect the universe, which turned his throat blue. Hence, he is called Neelkanth.
4. Lingaodbhava Story
Lord Shiva manifested as an infinite pillar of divine light to show his supreme power to Brahma and Vishnu. This is why the worship of the Shivling holds special importance on this day.
Maha Shivratri 2026 Puja Vidhi (Worship Method)
1. Morning Bath and Sankalp
Begin the day with a bath and take a vow to observe the fast and worship Lord Shiva.
2. Shivling Abhishek
Perform the Abhishek of the Shivling using:
- Water
- Milk
- Curd
- Ghee
- Honey
- Ganga water
- Bel leaves
These ingredients are also used to prepare Panchamrit which is offered to the Shivling.
3. Mantra Chanting
The main mantras are:
- Om Namah Shivaya
- Mahamrityunjaya Mantra
- Rudrashtakam, Shiva Chalisa
4. Night Vigil
Staying awake throughout the night and performing Shiva puja during the four-night phases is considered highly auspicious.
Maha Shivratri Vrat Katha (Fasting Story)
According to an ancient tale, a hunter once climbed a bel tree in the forest to stay safe during the night. Unknown to him, a Shivling was beneath the tree. Throughout the night, bel leaves kept falling onto the Shivling as the hunter stayed awake.
Although unintentional, this became an act of Shiva worship. Pleased by his sincerity, Lord Shiva blessed him with liberation. This story highlights that true devotion—intentional or unintentional—never goes unrewarded.
