Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most popular and prominent festivals of India. It is celebrated with great enthusiasm across the country as the birthday of Lord Ganesha. While it holds special significance in Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, today it is observed not only across India but also by Indians living abroad with the same devotion and joy.

On this occasion, devotees bring home idols of Lord Ganesha, install them, and worship for 10 days. On Anant Chaturdashi, the idol is immersed in water with devotion. In this article, we will understand in detail how to install a Ganesh idol at home and the important things to remember during the process.

Importance of Installing Ganesh Idol

  • Lord Ganesha is worshipped as the remover of obstacles (Vighnaharta) and the giver of prosperity.
  • Installing Ganapati at home removes negativity and brings positivity.
  • Every auspicious work begins with Ganesh Puja, making his presence in the home especially auspicious.
  • Establishing Ganesh idol during Ganesh Chaturthi ensures unity, happiness, and peace in the family.

Preparations Before Idol Installation

  1. Cleaning the House – Before installation, clean the house thoroughly, especially the place where the idol will be placed.
  2. Choosing the Right Place – The northeast (Ishan Kon) is considered the best direction for idol installation. If that is not possible, east or north are also suitable. The idol should never be placed directly on the ground, but on a pedestal or platform.
  3. Asana and Decoration – Place a red or yellow cloth on a wooden stool (chowki) and install the idol on it. Decorate the space with flowers, mango leaves, and toran for auspiciousness.
