Chapter 1 – Arjuna’s Despondency

Verse 41

Adharmaabhibhavaat’, Krishna, prdushyanti, kulstriyaH,
Streeshu, dushtaasu, vaarshney, jaayate, varnasankarH ||41||

English Meaning:

O Krishna! With the rise of unrighteousness, the women of the family become corrupt. And when women are corrupted, it leads to the rise of varna-sankara (the degradation of social and familial order).

Simple Explanation / Elaboration:

Arjuna is saying:

“O Krishna! When many noble families are destroyed due to war and the men who protect righteousness are killed, then unrighteousness (adharma) takes over. In such a situation, the women of the family become unprotected and vulnerable. When women are corrupted (meaning when their protection and moral values are lost), then the balance of the varna system (Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, Shudra) in society is disrupted, and mixed lineage (varna-sankara) is born.”

Philosophical Message / Social Insight:

  • This shloka reflects Arjuna’s deep concern about the social consequences of war.
  • The term “varna-sankara” does not merely refer to caste mixing, but to the breakdown of social order and moral values.
  • Arjuna sees the war not just as a personal conflict, but as a potential cultural and societal crisis.
