Chapter 1 – Arjuna’s Despondency

Verse 43

DoshaeH, etaeH, kulaghnaanaam’, varnsankarkaarkaeH,
Utsaadhyante, jaatidharmaH, kuldharmaH, ch, shaashvataH ||43||

O Krishna! The same evils that arise from the destruction of families by those who kill their own kin give birth to varna-sankara (intermixture of castes), and through those evils, the eternal duties of both family and social order are destroyed.

Simple Explanation / Elaboration:

Arjuna says:

“O Madhava! When the men of the family are killed and the women become morally corrupted, it leads to the birth of varna-sankara (mixed castes or intermingled generations). These consequences destroy the traditional duties of the caste and family system. The religious and social values that have been followed for generations will come to an end.”

Meaning of Key Terms:

  • Kulaghnah (Destroyers of Families): Those who cause the downfall of their own family lineage.
  • Varna-sankara: The intermixing of castes, which disrupts the clear division of societal roles and duties.
  • Jati Dharma and Kula Dharma: The social and familial traditions such as rituals, yajnas, shraddhas (ancestral offerings), purity, and moral conduct—these form the foundation of Sanatana Dharma.

According to Arjuna:

If all the worthy men are killed in battle, there will be no one left to perform yajnas, shraddhas, and other religious duties. As a result, not only will the current social order collapse, but the ancestors (pitrs) will also suffer, as they depend on the offerings from their descendants for peace. If these rites are not performed, they may fall into lower realms such as the pishacha (ghost) state.

Message:

This shloka highlights the immense value of religion, family, and tradition. When war or violence destroys entire family lineages, it doesn’t just end lives—it also breaks the chain of spiritual and cultural continuity. Arjuna is expressing a profound moral concern: war does not only cause physical destruction, but also leads to deep cultural and spiritual devastation.
