Saraswati Vrat is a sacred fast observed to seek the blessings of Goddess Saraswati and attain knowledge, wisdom, and prosperity in life. This vrat is especially observed on Vasant Panchami, the day dedicated to Goddess Saraswati. The mythical tale associated with this vrat dates back to the Krita Yuga and describes the hardships faced by King Suket and his wife Suvedi, and how they overcame their struggles with the blessings of Goddess Saraswati. This story strengthens devotees' faith and teaches that all obstacles in life can be overcome through the grace of the goddess.

Saraswati Vrat Katha

During the Krita Yuga, there lived a righteous king named Suket. He was a just ruler who cared deeply for his subjects and ruled his kingdom according to the principles of dharma. His wife, Suvedi, was not only exceptionally beautiful but also wise and devout.

One day, King Suket’s kingdom was attacked by powerful enemies. The king, unable to defend his kingdom, was forced to flee the battlefield to save his life. Queen Suvedi, upon realizing her husband had abandoned the battlefield, followed him. The royal couple, in search of refuge, wandered into a dense forest.

Exhausted and hungry, King Suket could no longer bear the hardships and collapsed. Queen Suvedi, distressed by her husband’s condition, laid his head on her lap and began to pray fervently to the gods for help.

By divine coincidence, the great sage Angiras happened to pass through the forest. Observing the plight of the king and queen, the sage inquired about their situation. Queen Suvedi, in tears, narrated their story. Sage Angiras, moved by their suffering, assured them that there was a way to overcome their troubles.

The sage advised them to visit a sacred place called Durga Kshetra, located near the Panchvati pond, and to worship Goddess Saraswati and Goddess Durga. Following the sage’s guidance, the queen carried her husband to the sacred site.

There, the sage instructed them to bathe in the holy waters of the Panchvati pond and purify their minds. He taught them the Shodashopachara Puja, a ritual consisting of 16 forms of worship, and guided them to perform the puja for nine days. On the tenth day, they performed a sacred fire ritual (havan) and made offerings as per the sage’s directions.

By the blessings of Goddess Saraswati, the royal couple's lives transformed. They were blessed with a son, whom they named Surya Pratap. Raised under the guidance of Sage Angiras, Surya Pratap grew up to be a brave warrior and a skilled swordsman. With the sage's blessings, Surya Pratap defeated the enemies who had taken over his father’s kingdom and restored the throne to his parents.

From that day onward, Queen Suvedi observed this vrat every year, and their family lived a life of happiness and prosperity.
