Shiv Ji Chalisa

॥ Doha ॥

Jai Ganesh Girija Suvan, Mangal Mool Sujan,
Kahat Ayodhyadas Tum, Dehu Abhay Varadan॥

Meaning: Victory to Lord Ganesha, the son of Parvati, who knows all auspiciousness. I, Ayodhyadas, seek a boon from you.

॥ Chaupai ॥

Jai Girija Pati Deen Dayala, Sada Kart Santan Pratipala.

Meaning:  Victory to the husband of Parvati! You show compassion to the needy and protect saints and sages.

Bhal Chandrama Sohat Nike, Kaanan Kundal Nagphani Ke.

Meaning:  O bearer of the trident, Neelkanth! The crescent moon shines brightly on your forehead, and snake-shaped earrings adorn your ears.

Ang Gaur Shir Gang Bahaye, Mundamal Tan Kshaar Lagaye.

Meaning:  You are fair complexioned, with the holy river Ganga flowing from your locks, a garland of skulls around your neck, and your body smeared with ashes.

Vastr Khal Baaghmbar Sohe, Chhavi Ko Dekhi Naag Man Mohe.

Meaning:  O Lord of the three worlds! Your attire resembles that of a tiger's skin. Snakes and sages are enchanted by your splendor.

Maina Matu Ki Have Dulaari, Baam Ang Sohat Chhavi Nyari.

Meaning:  The beloved daughter of Mother Maina, Goddess Parvati, shines on your left side; her beauty is extremely unique and rare.

Kar Trishul Sohat Chhavi Bhari, Karat Sada Shatrun Kshayakari.

Meaning:  Your hands hold the trident, glorifying your noble image, through which you continuously destroy enemies.

Nandi Ganesh Sohai Tahan Kaise, Saagar Madhya Kamal Hain Jaise.

Meaning: Your vehicle, Nandi, and Lord Ganesha both shine there, like lotuses blossoming amidst the ocean.

Kartik Shyam Aur Ganraau, Ya Chhavi Ko Kahi Jaat Na Kaau.

Meaning:  Kartikeya and his followers are also present there, and the beauty of this scene cannot be described.

Devan Jabahi Jaay Pukaara, Tab Hi Dukh Prabhu Aap Nivaara.

Meaning:  O Tripurari! Whenever the gods call for help, O Master! You immediately relieve their sorrows without delay.

Kiya Upadrav Tarak Bhari, Devan Sab Mili Tumhin Juhari.

Meaning:  When Tadakasur began to inflict atrocities, all the gods prayed to you for protection.

Turat Shadanan Aap Pathaayo, Lavanimansh Mahan Maari Giraayo.

Meaning:  At that moment, you sent Kartikeya there, and in the blink of an eye, he killed that demon.

Aap Jalandhar Asur Sanhaara, Suyash Tumhaar Vidit Sansaara.

Meaning:  You destroyed the terrible demon Jalandhar. Your glory spread from that event and became known throughout the world.

Tripurasur San Yuddh Machaai, Sabhin Kripa Kar Leen Bachaai.

Meaning: By fighting with the demon Tripura, you showed mercy to all the gods and liberated them from that evil terror.

Kiya Tapahin Bhagirath Bhari, Purab Pratijna Taasu Puraari.

Meaning:  After King Bhagirath's penance, you allowed the holy river Ganga to flow through your locks. It was because of you that Bhagirath's vow was fulfilled.

Daanin Mahin Tum Sam Ko Nahin, Sevak Stuti Karat Sadaahi.

Meaning:  No one is as charitable as you. Devotees always sing your praises and glorify you.

Ved Maahi Mahima Tum Gaai, Akath Anadi Bhed Nahin Paai.

Meaning:  Your glory is also described in the Vedas. However, due to being beginningless, no one has been able to understand your mystery.

Prakati Udadhi Manthan Mein Jwaala, Jarat Surasur Bhaaye Vihaala.

Meaning: When the poison emerged from the churning of the ocean, it began to burn both gods and demons, making them agitated.

Keenhi Daya Tahan Kari Sahaai, Neelkanth Tab Naam Kahaai.

Meaning: O Neelkanth! At that time, you consumed that poisonous fire, thus your name became Neelkanth.

Poojan Ramchandra Jab Keenha, Jeet Ke Lank Vibhishan Deenha.

Meaning: Before the attack on Lanka, Lord Shri Ram achieved victory only after worshiping you and making Vibhishan the king of Lanka.

Sahas Kamal Mein Ho Rahe Dhaari, Keenah Pariksha Tabahi Puraari.

Meaning:  O Mahadev! When Lord Shri Ramchandra was worshiping you with thousands of lotuses, you tested him by hiding in the flowers.

Ek Kamal Prabhu Rakhau Joi, Kamal Nayan Poojan Chahoon Soi.

Meaning: You hid a lotus flower with your illusion. Then Shri Ramchandra thought about worshipping the lotus-like eye.

Kathin Bhakti Dekhi Prabhu Shankar, Bhae Prasann Diye Ichchhit Var.

Meaning:  In this way, when Shri Ramchandra saw the firm faith of Shri Ramchandra in you, then you gave them the desired boon.

Jai Jai Jai Anant Avinaashi, Karat Kripa Sab Ke Ghatavaasi.

Meaning: Hey Shiva, you are infinite, imperishable. Your victory, victory, victory. You show mercy on everyone.

Dusht Sakal Nit Mohi Sataavai, Bhramat Rahoon Mohi Chain Na Aavai.

Meaning: Wicked thoughts always torment me and I remain confused because of which I do not get peace anywhere.

Traahi Traahi Main Nath Pukaaro, Yehi Avasar Mohi Aan Ubaaro.

Meaning: O Lord! Protect me, protect me – I am calling you in this way. You come and protect me from troubles and suffering.

Lai Trishul Shatrun Ko Maaro, Sankat Te Mohi Aan Ubaaro.

Meaning: O destroyer of sins! Destroy my enemies with your trident and deliver me from the ocean of worldly existence.

Meaning: Parents, brothers and sisters are all companions of happiness. No one provides support in sorrows, no one asks in case of calamity.

Meaning: You destroy suffering. You make all auspicious activities, and remove all obstacles and adversities.

Yogi Yati Muni Dhyaan Lagaavein, Shaard Narad Sheesh Navaavein.

Meaning: Yogis, ascetics, and sages all meditate on you. Even Narada Muni and Goddess Saraswati (Sharda) salute you.

Pandit Trayodashi Ko Laave, Dhyaan Poorvak Hom Karaave.

Meaning: Every devotee should invite a learned scholar-priest and perform worship and havan on the thirteenth date of every month.

Trayodashi Vrat Kare Hamesha, Taake Tan Nahin Rahai Kalesha.

Meaning:  A devotee who observes the fast of Trayodashi always has no disease in his body and no sorrow of any kind remains in his mind.

Dhoop Deep Naivedya Chadhaave, Shankar Sammukh Paath Sunaave.

Meaning:  After worshiping the statue or picture of Shiva by performing puja with incense, lamp, and naivedya, one should read Shiv Chalisa with devotion.

Meaning: By this, sins accumulated over births are destroyed, and ultimately, a person starts living in Shiva Lok, that is, he becomes liberated.

Kahain Ayodhyadas Aas Tumhaari, Jaani Sakal Dukh Harahu Hamaari.

Meaning:  Ayodhyadas Ji says that Lord Shankar, we only hope from you. You eliminate our sorrows by fulfilling our desires

Meaning: By reciting this Shiv Chalisa forty times daily, Lord fulfills desires. This chalisa-shaped Shiv Stuti was completed in Hemant Ritu Samvat 64 for world welfare.
