Shri Giriraj Chalisa

।। Doha ।।

Bandahu veena vadini, dhari Ganapati ko dhyan
Mahashakti Radha sahit, Krishna karau kalyan
Sumiran kari sab devgan, guru pitu baarambaar
Barnau Shri Giriraj yash, nij mati ke anusar

Meaning: I meditate on Mother Saraswati and Lord Ganesha, the veena player. May Mother Radha and Lord Krishna bless me. I also meditate on all the gods, gurus and my father. After this, I recite Giriraj Chalisa according to my wisdom.

Jai ho jai bandit Giriraja, Braj Mandal ke Shri Maharaja
Vishnu roop tum ho avatari, sundarta pe jag balihari
Svarn shikhar ati shobha pave, sur muni gan darshan koon aave
Shant kandara swarg samana, jahan tapasvi dharate dhyan

Meaning: O Giriraj Dev and Maharaj of Braj Mandal!! Victory to you. You are a form of Lord Vishnu himself and everyone is smitten by your beauty. Your peak is as beautiful as gold and all the gods, sages, saints etc. come to see it. Your area is very peaceful where ascetics meditate.

Drongiri ke tum yuvraja, bhakton ke sadhau hau kaaja
Muni Pulastya ji ke man bhaye, jor vinay kar tum koon laye
Munivar sangh jab Braj mein aaye, lakhi Brajbhoomi yahan thahraye
Vishnu Dham Golok suhawan, Yamuna Govardhan Vrindavan

Meaning: You are the crown prince of Drongiri and fulfill all the wishes of your devotees. You were brought here by sage Pulastya. You stayed with him in this Brajbhoomi. This is a Vishnu Dham where Mother Cow also resides. The holy river Yamuna flows here and it is also called Vrindavan.

Dekh dev man mein lalachaye, bas karne bahu roop banaye
Ko'u banar ko'u mrig ke roopa, ko'u vrksh ko'u lata swaroopa
Anand le Golok Dham ke, param upasak roop naam ke
Dwapar ant bhaye avatar, Krishnachandra Anand Murari

Meaning: Seeing this holy land, even all the gods from heaven were tempted and they came to live here in various forms. Some came as monkeys, some as deer, some took the form of trees and some as creepers. All the gods were enjoying this holy land and then around the end of Dwapar Yuga, Lord Vishnu's incarnation Shri Krishna himself was born here.

Mahima tumhari Krishna bakhaani, pooja kariye ki man thani
Brajvaasi sab ke liye bulayi, Govardhan pooja karvayi
Poojan koon vyajan banvaye, Brajvaasi ghar ghar te laaye
Gwal baal mili pooja keeni, sahas bhooja tumne kar leeni

Meaning: The glory of Shri Krishna is boundless and he asked the residents of this place to worship Giriraj mountain instead of worshiping Indra Dev. He called all the Brajvasis and got the Govardhan mountain worshipped. To worship Govardhan mountain, every Brajvasi brought dishes from his home and worshipped it.

Swayam prakat ho Krishna pooja mein, maang maang ke bhojan paave
Lakhi nar nari man harshaave, Jai Jai Jai Girivar gun gaave
Devaraj man mein risiyaye, nasht karan Braj megh bulaye
Chhaya kar Braj liyo bachai, ek bhoond na niche aayi

Meaning: Seeing this, you appeared in that Krishna puja yourself and started eating food by begging from the devotees. Seeing this, the people of Braj became very happy and started singing your praises. Seeing this, Indra Dev sitting in heaven became very angry and he decided to destroy Braj Bhoomi. After this, there was heavy rain on Braj Bhoomi but Shri Krishna lifted the entire Govardhan mountain on his single finger, under which not even a single drop of rain could fall.

Saath divas bhai barsa bhaari, thake megh bhaari jal dhaari
Krishnachandra ne nak pai dhaare, namo namo Braj rakshawaare
Kari abhimaan thake Surasai, kshama mangi puni astuti gaai
Trahimam main sharan tihaari, kshama karo Prabhu chook hamaari

Meaning: Indra Dev rained heavily on Braj Bhoomi for seven consecutive days but during this time Shri Krishna kept lifting Giriraj mountain on his nails. After seven days, Indra Dev got tired and the rain stopped. O Shri Krishna! We bow to you again and again for protecting the Braj region. Indra Dev's pride was now shattered and he ran to Shri Krishna and apologized to him and praised him.

Baar baar binati ati keeni, saat kos parikamma deeni
Sang Surabhi Airavat laaye, haath jod kar bheent gahaaye
Abhay daan pa Indra sihaaye, kari pranam nij lok sidhaaye
Jo yeh katha sunain chit laave, ant samay surpati pad paave

Meaning: Indra Dev came to you and apologized for his mistake and circumambulated the Govardhan mountain seven times. He also brought Surabhi and Airavat elephants with him and folded his hands in front of Shri Krishna and presented him with many things as gifts. Shri Krishna forgave Indra Dev and Indra Dev went back to his world, pleased with this. Any devotee who listens to this story attains ultimate happiness at the end of his life.

Govardhan hai naam tihaarau, karte bhakton ko nistaarau
Jo nar tumhare darshan paave, tinke dukh door hove jaave
Kundan mein jo karen aachaman, dhany dhany vah manav jeevan
Manasi Ganga mein jo nhaave, sidhe swarg lok koon jaave

Meaning: Your name is Govardhan and you fulfill all the wishes of your devotees. Whoever sees you, you remove all his sorrows. Whoever sips water from your pond, his life becomes blessed. Whoever takes a bath in Manasi Ganga, he directly gets heaven.

Doodh chadha jo bhog lagaave, aadhi vyadhi tehi paas na aave
Jal phal Tulsi patra chadhaave, man vaanchit phal nishchay paave
Jo nar det doodh ki dhara, bhrau rahe taakau bhandara
Karein jaagran jo nar koi, dukh daridra bhay tahi na hoi

Meaning: Whoever offers milk to you, all his troubles are eliminated. Whoever offers water, fruits and Tulsi to you, he gets the desired result. Whoever does Abhishek of milk on you, you fill his house with wealth and prosperity. Whoever organises Jagran in your name in his house, you remove all his sorrows, poverty, fear etc.

‘Shyam' shilamay nij jan traata, bhakti mukti sarvas ke daata
Putra heen jo tum koon dhyaaven, takoon putra prapti hove jaaven
Dandauti parikamma karahin, te sahajahin bhavasagar tarahin
Kali mein tum sam dev na duja, sur nar muni sab karte pooja

Meaning: You are the one who removes the sorrows of all human beings and gives them salvation. Whoever comes to you with the desire to have a son, you fulfill his wish. Whoever circumambulates you, you help him cross the Bhava Sagar. There is no other god like you in Kaliyug and gods, humans, sages and saints all worship you.

Jo yeh chaalisa padhai, sunai shuddh chitt laai
Satya satya yeh satya hai, Girivar karain sahaay
Kshama karahu aparadh mam, trahimam Giriraj
Shyam Bihari sharan mein, Govardhan Maharaj

Meaning: Whoever reads this Chalisa or listens to it with a pure heart, it is true that Giriraj Maharaj bestows his blessings on him. O Giriraj Maharaj! Please forgive all our sins. I Shyam Bihari am in your refuge.
