Chapter 1 – Arjuna’s Despondency

Verse 10

Aparyaaptam’, tat’, asmaakam’, balam’, Bheeshmaabhirakshitam’,
Paryaaptam’, tu, idam’, eteshaam’, balam’, Bheemaabhirakshitam’ ||10||

Translation:

Our army, although protected by Bhishma, still appears insufficient to us.
On the other hand, the Pandavas’ army, though protected by Bhima, seems sufficient and strong to us.

Deeper Interpretation / Detailed Meaning:

This verse reflects Duryodhana’s inner anxiety.

He says that although their army is larger in number and protected by the mighty Bhishma, it still feels insufficient — indicating a lack of confidence.

In contrast, the Pandava army, which is smaller and led by Bhima (who, though a great warrior, is not considered on par with Bhishma), still appears to Duryodhana as sufficient and powerful.

Here, a psychological aspect becomes evident:

Duryodhana harbors a fear in his mind that the Pandavas stand on the side of righteousness (Dharma), and hence their strength appears far greater than it actually is.

Whereas in his own army, even with warriors like Bhishma, there is a lack of unity and moral strength.

This verse reveals Duryodhana’s self-doubt and the fear he holds in his heart toward the Pandavas.
