Chapter 1 – Arjuna’s Despondency
Verse 6
YudhamanyuH, ch, vikrantH, uttamaujaH, ch, veeryavaan’
SaubhadrH, DraupdeyaH, ch, sarve, ev, maharathaH ||6||
Meaning / Deeper Interpretation:
In this verse, Sanjay continues describing the other mighty warriors on the side of the Pandavas.
These include:
- Yudhamanyu – unmatched in bravery and valor,
- Uttamauja – possessing extraordinary strength and heroism,
- Saubhadra – that is, Abhimanyu, the brilliant son of Arjuna, who, at just sixteen years old, was capable of penetrating the complex Chakravyuha battle formation,
- And the five sons of Draupadi – collectively referred to as the Draupadeyas. All of them are valiant warriors.
All these fighters are described as “Maharathis” – warriors so powerful that they can take on thousands of opponents at once.
In-depth Insight:
This verse again subtly reflects Duryodhana’s inner anxiety and insecurity.
He repeatedly names the powerful warriors in the Pandava army – not just to acknowledge who they are, but also to reassure himself:
“I have nothing to fear.”
Yet, beneath his words lies hidden fear.
Mentioning “Saubhadra” (Abhimanyu) signifies that the Pandavas’ strength lies not only in experienced warriors but also in the next generation.
Referring to “Draupadeyas” – all five sons of Draupadi – together shows that the tradition of righteousness continues strongly through the Pandava lineage.
This verse also teaches us that when a battle is between Dharma (righteousness) and Adharma (unrighteousness), victory doesn’t depend solely on weapons and strategy.
It also rests on morality, legacy, and the zeal of the next generation.
Every warrior who stands on the side of Dharma is, in truth, the real “Maharathi”.
