Chapter 2 – Sankhya Yoga

Verse 29

āśhcharya-vat paśhyati kaśhchid enan
āśhcharya-vad vadati tathaiva chānyaḥ
āśhcharya-vach chainam anyaḥ śhṛiṇoti
śhrutvāpyenaṁ veda na chaiva kaśhchit

Simple Meaning

O Arjuna!
Some see the soul as a wonder,
some speak of it as a wonder,
some hear of it as a wonder,
and even after hearing about it,
very few truly understand it.

This means the nature of the soul is so subtle, divine, and mysterious
that most people cannot fully comprehend it —
even after seeing, hearing, or talking about it.

Detailed Explanation

Lord Krishna explains that the true nature of the soul (Atman) is beyond ordinary perception.
It cannot be fully grasped by the senses, logic, or intellectual discussion alone.

1. Some see the soul as a wonder

Some people, through spiritual exposure or inner experience,
realize that the soul is something extraordinary and divine.
They feel amazed by its mysterious nature.
However, merely feeling wonder does not mean complete realization.

2. Some speak of the soul as a wonder

Some people give lectures, talk about scriptures,
and speak beautifully about the soul.
But often, their understanding remains limited to words.
They may describe the soul,
but may not have truly realized it in their own life.

3. Some hear of the soul as a wonder

Some people listen with interest and devotion
to teachings about the soul.
They feel inspired,
but listening alone does not give true self-realization.
Without personal practice and inner experience,
the soul remains only a concept.

4. Even after hearing, few truly know the soul

Krishna emphasizes a deep truth —
many people hear about the soul,
yet still do not truly understand it.

Because the soul is:

  • Beyond the physical senses
  • Beyond ordinary intellectual thinking
  • Known only through direct realization and spiritual awareness

Purpose of Krishna’s Teaching

Krishna is helping Arjuna understand that
the soul is not an ordinary subject.
Therefore, grieving over the death of the body
is based on ignorance.

When the soul is eternal and wondrous,
lamenting over bodily change is not wise.

  • It cannot be fully known through logic alone
