Chapter 2 – Sāṅkhya Yoga

Verse 30

dehī nityam avadhyo ’yaṁ dehe sarvasya bhārata
tasmāt sarvāṇi bhūtāni na tvaṁ śhochitum arhasi

Simple Meaning in English

O Arjuna,
The soul that resides within every body is everlasting and indestructible.
Only the body perishes—never the eternal Self. Thus, mourning over the loss of physical bodies is unnecessary and not aligned with higher wisdom.

Detailed Explanation

1. The Soul (Dehī) Is Eternal

The word dehī refers to the one who dwells in the body—the soul.
This inner Self does not change, diminish, or disappear.
It exists before the body, remains untouched during life, and continues after the body is gone.

Just as space inside a pot is not destroyed when the pot breaks, the soul remains unaffected by the fall of the body.

2. The Soul Is “Avadhya” — Impossible to Destroy

No weapon, no force of nature, no power in the world can harm the soul.
It is:

  • uncuttable
  • unburnable
  • unwettable
  • undryable

It is beyond physical nature and beyond all destruction.

3. The Body Alone Is Mortal

Bodies come and go according to time, age, and circumstances.
Birth and death are natural cycles for all physical forms.
But the indwelling Self never dies— it simply moves to another state, another body, or another realm.

4. Therefore, Arjuna Should Not Grieve

Krishna gently tells Arjuna:

  • Mourning the death of warriors
  • Feeling guilty or fearful
  • Being emotionally overwhelmed

all arise from misunderstanding the true nature of life. Once you recognize that the soul never dies, your perspective on death, fear, loss, and sorrow changes completely.

Deep Spiritual Insight

This verse teaches that:

  • The real identity of a person is not the body.
  • The soul is unborn, unchanging, and immortal.
  • Grief arises from identifying with what is temporary.
  • Wisdom lies in seeing the eternal within all beings.

Understanding this truth leads to inner strength, clarity, and fearlessness.

Word-by-Word Meaning

  • dehī — the soul dwelling in the body
  • nityam — eternal
  • avadhyaḥ — indestructible
