Krishna Janmashtami Vrat Katha

According to religious scriptures, Shri Krishna was born in Mathura on the eighth day of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month. According to mythology, Kansa usurped the throne of his father Ugrasen and imprisoned him and declared himself the king of Mathura. Kansa had a sister named Devaki. He loved Devaki very much. Kansa got Devaki married to Vasudev. But when he was bidding farewell to Devaki, there was a voice from the sky that Devaki's eighth son would kill Kansa. Kansa got scared after hearing the voice from the sky and put Devaki and Vasudev in prison. After this, the cruel Kansa killed 7 children of Devaki and Vasudev. But when Devaki's eighth child was about to be born, there was lightning in the sky. According to the belief, at 12 midnight, all the locks of the jail broke automatically and all the soldiers guarding there fell into a deep sleep. And they all slept. It is said that at that time Lord Vishnu

appeared and told Vasudev-Devaki that he would be born from Devki's womb. After this he said that they should leave him i.e. his incarnation with Nand Baba in Gokul and bring the girl born in their house to Mathura and hand it over to Kansa. After this Vasudev did as the Lord said. He left Kanha with Nand Baba and handed over the girl brought from Gokul to Kansa. Nand and Yashoda raised Shri Krishna and Shri Krishna killed Kansa. On the occasion of Janmashtami, people worship Shri Krishna and celebrate this festival with great pomp.
