Chapter 1 – Arjuna’s Despondency
Verse 22
(Arjuna says to Lord Krishna):
“Until I have carefully observed these warriors who have gathered here to fight, and until I have identified with whom I must engage in this great battle, please keep my chariot stationed here.”
Deep Interpretation / Expanded Explanation:
In this verse, Arjuna expresses his desire to observe those who have assembled on the battlefield to fight. He requests Lord Krishna to position the chariot between both armies so he can clearly see “the warriors who stand ready to fight on Duryodhana’s side.”
Arjuna’s intention is not merely to assess his enemies but also to recognize which of his dear relatives, teachers, and loved ones are standing against him.
This verse reveals Arjuna’s humanity, emotional conflict, and inner turmoil. He is not just a warrior—he is also a son, a brother, a friend, and a compassionate human being.
Key Points:
- Arjuna is not yet fully mentally prepared for battle.
- He wants to know exactly who stands against him on the other side.
- This verse marks the beginning of Arjuna’s emotional crisis (Vishada or inner conflict).
- It sets the stage for Lord Krishna’s divine discourse—the Bhagavad Gita.
